- Description: The model version floated, the provider shipped an update, and the JSON the parser expected gained a wrapper, so every request parsed to empty and nothing…

Between the nothing and the incident sit 6 quiet assumptions, and the incident is the story of one of them failing.

This is the anatomy of the unpinned model version, and of the specific property that makes the drift silent: the parser handles the unexpected shape by returning empty rather than raising, and the empty is a valid result, so the failure is indistinguishable from a legitimate empty response.

This was an OpenAI-compatible API, and the mechanics are the same for any provider whose model aliases float.

## Why the version floated

The model was referenced by an alias, and the alias is the provider's pointer, and the pointer moves when the provider ships, and the shipping is the provider's decision, and the decision is not announced as a breaking change, because the provider considers the alias a moving target, and the moving target is the convenience, and the convenience is the default, and the default is the drift, and the drift is the incident, because the code was written against the old shape, and the old shape is gone, and the gone is the break, and the break is silent.

The alias is the convenience, because the alias means the code automatically gets the improvements, and the improvements are the reason the alias exists, and the existence is the trade, and the trade is the automatic improvement for the automatic breakage, and the breakage is the cost, and the cost is the incident, and the incident is the price of the convenience, and the price is the reason to pin.

The pin is the specific version, and the specific version is the contract, and the contract is the shape, and the shape is the schema, and the schema is the parser's expectation, and the expectation is the code, and the code is the feature, and the feature is the revenue, and the revenue is the reason to pin, and the pin is the fix.

## Why the drift was silent

The parser read the response, and the response had the new shape, and the new shape had a wrapper, and the wrapper meant the expected key was not at the top level, and the not top level meant the lookup returned None, and the None was handled, and the handled None was the empty result, and the empty result was valid, and the valid empty was the silent failure, and the silent failure is the worst kind, because the monitoring does not alert on a valid result, and the not alerting is the undetected incident, and the undetected incident is the user report, and the user report is the slow detection, and the slow detection is the cost.

The parser's handling of the missing key was defensive, and the defensive handling is good practice, and the good practice is the silence, because the defensive code converts the error into the empty, and the empty is the valid, and the valid is the undetected, and the undetected is the incident, and the incident is the cost of the defensiveness, and the cost is the reason to distinguish the missing from the empty.

This is the same silence as [the promise chain that swallowed a rejection and reported success](https://debugly.dev/reviewing-promise-swallowed-rejection/), and the common root is the property, not the platform.

## What actually fixed it

**Pin the model version.** The code references the specific version, and the specific version is the contract, and the contract is the shape, and the shape is the schema, and the schema is the parser's expectation, and the expectation is stable, and the stability is the fix, and the fix is the pin, and the pin is the one-line change, and the change is the prevention.

**Validate the schema on every response.** The response is checked against the expected schema, and the check fails on the unexpected shape, and the failure is the error, and the error is the alert, and the alert is the detection, and the detection is the fast, and the fast is the fix, because the drift is caught at the first request rather than at the user report.

**Distinguish the missing from the empty.** The parser raises on the missing key rather than returning empty, and the raise is the error, and the error is the signal, and the signal is the detection, and the detection is the alert, and the alert is the fix, because the missing key is not a valid empty, and the not valid is the error, and the error is the correct handling.

**Gate the upgrade on the golden set.** The model change is run against the frozen dataset, and the dataset catches the shape change, and the catch is the block, and the block is the prevention, and the prevention is the gate, and the gate is the discipline from [the golden dataset that caught a quiet model regression](https://debugly.dev/golden-dataset-caught-model-regression/), which is why the two fixes look alike.

**Treat the model as a dependency.** The model is a dependency, and the dependency has a version, and the version is pinned, and the pinned version is the lockfile, and the lockfile is the contract, and the contract is the stability, and the stability is the fix, and the fix is the discipline, because the model is not a service that floats, it is a dependency that should be pinned like any other, and the pinning is the control.

## If it happens again

A floating model alias changes when the provider ships, and the change can alter the output schema, and a parser that returns empty on the unexpected shape makes the drift silent. Pin the model version, validate the schema on every response, raise on the missing key rather than returning empty, and gate upgrades on the golden set.

The feature returned nothing and nothing errored, because the model's shape changed and the parser's defensiveness converted the break into a valid empty. I now check for that property first, because it is where the failure actually lives.
